Join the Oglesby Public Library Board of Trustees for a town hall meeting after hours at Oglesby Library on Friday, November 16, 2018, starting at 6:30 PM as we discuss the results of our October community survey, talk about the direction for the library’s future, and invite community comments. We hope to see you there!
Thank you to everyone who came, and to the 264 people who filled out surveys! Here is a pdf of the document with the graphs of the results that was handed out at the meeting: Survey results 2018.
The library will be closed on Saturday, November 10 in observance of Veterans Day.
The library will reopen at 10:00 am on Monday, November 12.
Along with other area libraries, the Oglesby Library is participating in the 9th annual Food for Fines program. During these two weeks only, the library will accept canned or boxed non-perishable food donations towards payment of library fines.
Each donated food item pays $1.00 in library fines, up to 25 items per patron. Donated food is only accepted for overdue fines, not for lost or damaged books, card replacement, prints or faxes, or nonresident fees.
Don’t have any overdue fines? Feel free to bring donations anyway. We will take all donations to area food pantries.
As in past years, the collected donations go to area food pantries, helping restock shelves in November and December.
Suggested food items include canned fruits and vegetables, soups, cereals, pasta mixes, and canned meats. Items must be in their original, unopened packaging. Homemade or perishable items, damaged packages, outdated food, or glass containers are not accepted.
Interested in the exploits of 1,100 daring GIs who served in a bold, fascinating, secret World War II unit? The 23rd HQ Special Troops, also known as The Ghost Army, was an unsung top-secret deception unit that used inflatable tanks, sound effects, and illusion to fool Hitler’s legions on the battlefields of Europe. Many of the soldiers were artists, recruited to handle visual trickery. In stolen moments, they painted and sketched all they saw.
The Ghost Army of WWII presentation on Tues, October 16, 2018, from 5:30 to 6:45 PM will bring their exploits to life with video clips of veterans, WWII footage, photos, maps, and more.
There will be a Q&A session included. Presenter Rick Beyer co-authored the New York Times bestseller The Ghost Army of WWII and produced the PBS documentary The Ghost Army. His books and DVDs will be available for purchase.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Oglesby Library.
Looking for a family-friendly way to celebrate Oktoberfest? Celebrate the fantastic European tradition of polka at the library on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at 2:00 PM! Bring your kids and grandkids!
Award-winning accordion player Mike Schneider of Pint Size Polkas and the Mike Schneider Band will play popular polka tunes from the 20th century. You’ll learn about the history of polka music, its various styles, plus how the accordion is played via one very special magic trick. A little German lingo will be thrown in for good Oktoberfest measure. Happy Oktoberfest, Oglesby!
This program is supported by a grant from OmniArts.
